Perv Circus Boat Party July

Rappers and slappers infested the Perv Circus Boat for a night of debauchery and damn right rude electro and jackin’ beats. DJ’s Harlow, Minimal Animal SoundSystem and Your Niece supplied crate’s full of top brass tunes keeping the rammed boat afloat till sunset over Poole Bay.

Stop Motion Summer #1

This summer will see a influx of content for Many Chefs Broth and also some very exciting news – which unfortunately cant go into just yet.

Any how – do you ever get an idea that makes you think “That might just work?” and feel the urge to try it there and then? On the walk home from work I was thinking about shooting with DOF adapters and the many frustrating little issues with doing so – like the Horizontal and Vertical flip expected though the optics, the tricky cumbersome payload without propper rail/rod support system’s, the lack of Auto Focus (although not a big problem for many, as this allows for much greater creative control) and issues with vibrating /rotating focusing screens. Shooting with DOF adapters is not the answer to achieving ‘great looking cinematic shots’ but what it does do is open up plenty of creative possibilities.

With this in mind i was deterred from going out and shooting with my Camera and DOF adapter, with the very limited time i had before i ran out of light i needed to shoot what i had in mind in super time. I would also require to have full and speedy control over aperture, ISO and shutter speed. Of course, my film camera has these controllable options but not quite like a DSLR.

This lead me to the possibility of stop motion, it would allow shallow DOF (the kind of stylisation I had in mind) and I would be able to set up quickly and shoot instantly. The main issues being 1.My D50 is limited to shooting at about 4 frames per second in JPEG mode, this is a country mile away from the standardised 25 fps usually used in film and 2. Camera motion is exaggerated when using the 70-300mm lens. You’ll notice (2) in the first jerky shot of the glass of Orange juice.

This is a first attempt at stop motion in an outside environment. This summer i’ll be making 4 stop motion shorts. This being the first, which is purely for experience and experimenting.

Check out the video below, dont forget to watch it in HD!

Foxhound Photos shoot on AbbyShot.com

Being a massive fan of Metal Gear Solid my friend Tim Ward stumbled across http://www.abbyshot.com. A wicked site devoted to recreating the famous garments from not only the Silver Screen but from some of the best Video Games EVAR! . In their own words “AbbyShot Clothiers is a privately held corporation founded in July 2002. AbbyShot’s garment designs are styled after clothing worn in movies, anime series, TV shows and computer games, yet completely wearable as high-end, durable, everyday apparel.”

Naturally if you have played any of the MGS games (MGS on the PSX notably for this garment) and love them as much as we do you will find it pretty damn hard not to fall in love with this awesome long jacket worn famously by Liquid Snake

Tim - Foxhound Long Jacket

As soon as the garment arrived we set on down to Lulworth, Dorset to take some sick photos of Tim in the jacket. Pleased with the shoot Tim added the photos to AbbyShot’s facebook group. Not long after that AbbyShot checked the photos out and emailed Tim and Myself in order to use the photos for their site, of course we were happy to oblige.

Audio Kink @ iBar 10.04.2010

I heard rumblings in the underground that an intimate Dirty Electro and Fidget monthly event upstairs @ iBar in Bournemouth is making a few ripples in the scene. To be perfectly honest we’re all getting a little bit tired of the same old, same old in Bournemouth. Thus; I insisted I would investigate and go on a little photo OP to Audio Kinks April event with DJ’s H[s]Z, Cockney Nutjob, Harlow & JQ

Photos: http://photos.manychefsbroth.co.uk/#7

I find it hard really hard to find a night where all the DJ’s not only KNOW their tunes, but they LOVE their tunes, specially in the world of ‘House’, maybe im not going to the right places?

In anycase all three Audio Kink DJ’s oozed vibes from their Electro & Fidget infested pours, smashing tunes from the likes of Wolfgang Gartner, Aquasky, Mighty-fools to name a few and crate loads of ones I couldnt even dream of naming! ..what made it special is they all danced their tits off as they did it, VIBES!

DJ Harlow

You can tell this night wasn’t for fashionista’s and posers. Thank <Insert religious figure here> for real DJ’s playing tunes they adore and know, thats what really makes you want to come back for more.

‘Implosion’ is downstairs, which is Hard House/Hard Style (not personally my thing) but the massive and crew in the basement love it to pieces. Fair play, leave ‘em to it, I personally just wish it was two floors of Electro & Fidget, but you cant have it all!

H[s]Z

If you’re a Electro/Fidget head then you do have to check out Audio Kink, every Month there’s an impressive line up guaranteed to please, with the likes of legends Jon Merrit (One half of Dirty Inc) and many others having graced the ones & two’s in Audio Kinks existance [update - Luke Dubyah (Bomo Beats label owner & Fire 107.6FM DJ) is playing May 15 2010, Quality!).

If Electro/Fidget isnt entirely your thing, but you do want something different and more rewarding from your Saturday night, judging from what I witnessed, i would without a doubt recommend Audio Kink.

Good Vibes, Good tunes, Very Very Impressive DJ's for a free entry event and all in such an intimate quality little venue. Sweet!

Peace

James Williams

[Update] – The next Audio Kink is May 15th 2010 with DJ’s Luke Dubyah (Fire 107.6FM/Bomo Beats), Harlow (Enter/Frolic) and Meow (House Cat/Implosion)

>Autumn, I do really love you.

>

Hello…

Its been a while since i posted here, its been at the back of my mind in all honesty.

But today while walking to work, it was impossible not to notice the rich spectrum of autumnal colours as the leaves laid on the pavement. It really was a very pretty sight. And for the first time in almost 3 Months now I had that urge to pick up my Camera again.
Unfortunately I had to go to work, so i couldn’t. But it did make me wonder why its been so long since I picked up my DSLR.
For the time being, until I can find time to get out and do some nice photos I thought I’d post some of the last few months along with how they were shot (for the photo-heads
out there like I).
Lady Bird -
NIKON D50 SIGMA 70-300mm. Manual. ISO 200. F/5.6. 1/640. No Flash
Open aperture to widest at that zoom level for greatest Depth of Field in order to draw eye to subject. No flash used as the lighting was fantastic here and luckily they had just been watered so the droplets had formed.

Honey Bee –
NIKON D50 SIGMA 70-300mm. Manual. ISO 200. F/5.6. 1/400. Fill in Flash
I used a small amount of fill in flash here (notice the shine on eye and back of bee) as it was a very bright day and other bushes and such offered unwanted shade. Shot with wide Aperture to give good DOF but not too open that most of the bee remains in focus.
More Photos from this Set can be viewed on my Flickr and I update with more later on :-)

>DIY DOF (Depth of Field) Adapter.

>To those who are not as sad (or passionate, you choose) about the Technological side of film (if you don’t bum articles about certain lens compression, shooting with UBER large apertures or would die for a REDROCK adapter) then you MIGHT not know what a DOF 35mm Adapter is (Honestly i dont mean that to sound patronising, in ANYWAY!)

Well just briefly; in Film* a ‘Cinematic’ quality is usually achieved by a shallow/short DOF (Depth of Field, amount of subject/distance in focus within frame) allowing for greater control  and Selective Focus. And by ‘Film Grain’ (or ‘Film Noise’) which adds the making the film look softer and a bit more ‘diffused’.
*When i say Film, I’m taking about methodology/composition. Of course you cannot just put a 35MM adapter on your Sony HandyCam and make films similar to KUBRICK.
Home video and small diameter lens cameras look cheap and crap due to a large depth of field (everything being in focus) and by being extremely ‘sharp’
In order to get a ‘Cinematic ‘ quality you’ll need some way of shooting with high quality, large
Diameter/Aperture lenses.
Conventionally there is no way of slapping a ‘Prime’ lens onto a standard video camera like mine (PANASONIC HDC-SD100) so in order to achieve this look we need an adapter.
Bring on the DOF (Depth of Field) Adapter.
Here is my HDC-SD100 with home made DOF adapter and SIGMA 70-300mm Lens.
No, this is only a working prototype. I couldnt not be used for making any shots at all.
A few MASSIVE reasons why. Next Blog
